He is described as being white, between 50 and 60 years old, with a grey beard and was wearing dark clothing.
On Tuesday morning two women were driving south along Marlborough Road in Gort when they spotted a man sitting in the middle of the road.
The women, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he was sitting down with his head between his knees and appeared to be in shock.
They stopped to see if he was all right.
"We stopped and the man was sitting on the middle of the road and said 'I'm really sorry to bother you, but can I ask you for some help?'" said one of the women.
"I said 'do you know what's wrong?' and he said 'I'm really sorry, but I've just been killed.'
"I said 'what?'
"He said 'yes I've been killed'."
She described him as "obviously very distressed".
She added: "He said 'I was just walking along the road and my car just fell into a ravine and I couldn't get out of the car because it's broken and I was knocked unconscious and when I woke up I was lying there in the middle of the road and I'm really sorry for the trouble I've caused'."
He was able to get out of the car and they called the emergency services.
When emergency services arrived they were told the man had been killed in a car accident.
Gort gardaí are investigating the incident and have released an appeal for witnesses or anyone who may have seen a white car between Gort and Milltown, close to the entrance to the Cork Country Way.
The incident happened at about 3.30am.
